How to increase your website Search Engine Ranking

Pick your strategic keywords: Keywords return a result to a user when he types in a set of words in a search engines text box. The strategic keywords are words which you anticipate what the user is going to enter to get his result. It is a good idea to keep strategic keywords of the length of two to three words. Pick your strategic keywords carefully.

Keyword Positioning: The strategic keywords should be placed in very conspicuous places in your pages, if possible, in the page title and also in the paragraphs following the page title. This will ensure that the web page is ranked well.

Use Meta Tags: Meta tags are also a convenient way, but not a sure shot way, to enhance web page rankings, as many search engines may not support them. But it does make a site easier to search for many search engines. This feature is mistaken by many web developers for enhancing search engine performance. Many web pages get good rankings even in the absence of Meta tags.

Tables: Place tables in such a way that the text is not broken apart by the search engine. Meta tags can be used where tables are concerned to make search engines return relevant results.

Using Keywords on sites content: Use HTML text on your web page and also see that the keywords are placed on the web page’s content.

Use more HTML text: Nowadays many sites use graphics to enhance the look and feel of the website. Though it is a very good strategy to increase the number of visits of a user, graphics are not read by search engines. It is better to use HTML text more often in your web pages. It is a good idea to check that that your Title and Alt tags are accurate and descriptive enough.

Use Hyper links:
Usually in a website there is a homepage, which contains links to internal pages. Links can be of two types, one is the HTML hyperlink and another is the image map link. Search engines do not recognise image map links very well and thus do not follow inside links. HTML hyperlinks will enable a search engine to search the inside pages of your website and thus bring relevant information on the forefront to the user.

Avoid certain code and symbols:
CGI code is used very often for accessing information from a database and returning results in HTML format to a user. These results may not be read by search engines. Using symbols also poses a difficulty to search engines to return results.

Key Pages: These key pages should include the summary of your website in some pages. This gives the search engine the option of returning results even if your internal pages cannot be accessed.

Keep checking for listings: It is pivotal to check your sites performance with regards to all the search engines frequently, in order to check their listings. Some search engines like Google, provide a country specific search for sites. It can be to your advantage if you avail of this facility and ask them to include your site.

Avoid Cloaking: Let the content of the website and what you submit to search engines be the same. Do not present different information to search engines and different to users. This will affect repeated visits and rankings.
